15th-Apr-2008 02:32 pm - RANTY RANTY RANTY RANT. NOT UNDER A CUT.
fight club: light my cigarette
This came up in [info]loyal_badger and I'm trying very, very hard not to get too steamed up about it, because I never want to cause drama and wank among those lovely people. But really, it surprises me that even in fair places like Hufflepuff, you still hear statistics about how many gay people exist in the world.

I've heard one in every ten people are gay, and now I've heard one in twenty, too. This is something that always makes me go off on a rant, whether it's a judgment on how many gay couples should be in a fic or how many gay characters there can be in an RPG.

Yes, of course you have a right to your opinion. But I also have a right to tell you when I think your opinion is flawed and defend all the people you are labeling statistics, especially because this is only one of my BIGGEST PET PEEVES EVER.

I'm trying not to get hot under the collar about it, you guys, I'm trying so hard. This is not about any of the Hufflepuffs; in fact, they were very kind about debating with me when I brought it up, which I appreciate. It simply annoys me that such heterocentric statistics are so universally accepted that it doesn't even occur to nice, fair people like that that they might end up offending someone. I'm personally a little bit offended to be considered a statistic by so much of the world, and (righteously, I think) annoyed on the behalf of the people that can't speak up for themselves about it.

And no, I am not putting this under a cut, or even locking it. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME, K. DEAL WITH IT.

Statistics about sexuality are STATISTICALLY FLAWED. It is not possible to put a number on how many gay people there are, not when homosexuality is taboo and closeted, because you can hardly expect people being surveyed about their sexuality to answer honestly. Even people that are out and proud are bound to be suspicious of a random surveyor wanting to know what their sexuality is, and can you blame them? THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD THAT WOULD SEVERELY HURT THEM OR AT LEAST HATE THEM FOR ADMITTING IT.

Any surveys that require humans to answer questions are statistically flawed by design alone, because people LIE. A lot. When the survey is about a social stigma like being GAY, those statistics will be even further off and even less significant.

Just... think about that next time you try to assign statistics to any "minority", ok? All I want is for people to realize what their words can do and not use them without understanding the consequences.

Sorry for the foaming at the mouth rant. I'm cooling off now that it's off my chest, I swear. >.>
